Rosatom expects the project to build a nuclear medicine center in Egypt to begin in 2027, according to the company's CEO, Alexei Likhachev.
He explained that one of the Egyptian side’s demands for expanding the scope of cooperation is the establishment of an advanced and high-performance center for nuclear medicine, based on a research reactor, which would provide a comprehensive solution.
Likhachev told reporters: "I believe this project will enhance Egypt's leading position as one of the world's tourism capitals, and will complement the wide range of tourism services with medical tourism opportunities. We have a comprehensive solution ready for implementation. I sincerely hope that we will be able to open this center as soon as possible, perhaps in 2027."
It is also reported that the company announced it is in negotiations with Egypt to study the possibility of building two additional units at the Dabaa nuclear power plant.
The El Dabaa nuclear power plant is the first nuclear power plant in Egypt, located in the city of El Dabaa in the Matrouh Governorate on the Mediterranean coast, about 300 kilometers northwest of Cairo.
The station consists of four power units, each with a capacity of 1200 megawatts, equipped with VVER-1200 third-generation advanced reactors, which are among the latest Russian reactor technologies, and have reference stations operating successfully in Russia and other countries.
The project contracts were signed and entered into force on December 11, 2017, and include comprehensive commitments from the Russian side that are not limited to the construction of the station, but extend to include:
Supply of nuclear fuel throughout the plant's operational life.
Training and supporting Egyptian personnel during the operation and maintenance phases for the first ten years.
Construction of specialized storage facilities for spent nuclear fuel.
Providing secure containers for storing this fuel, under a separate agreement.
The arrival of the first reactor pressure vessel is a milestone in the project, which embodies Egypt’s ambitious vision to diversify energy sources, achieve energy security, and drive sustainable development within the framework of the National Energy Strategy 2035.
