Russian nutritionist: Eating tomatoes prolongs human life

Nutritionist Veronika Gusakova told Rossiyskaya Gazeta that tomatoes contain lycopene, which prevents the development of cardiovascular diseases and prolongs life.

She said that lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from damage and supports the normal function of the inner walls of blood vessels. For this reason, according to Gusakova, the potential use of lycopene in anti-aging is currently being studied. Furthermore, it has been shown that higher concentrations of this substance in the blood are associated with a lower mortality rate.

She reminded everyone that lycopene is a natural carotenoid pigment, responsible for the red color in tomatoes and some other fruits. But more importantly, it is a very powerful antioxidant ; research suggests it may be the most potent of all carotenoids.

She added: "Lycopene may be beneficial for men's health, as consuming it reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Scientists also view lycopene-containing products as an additional protection for the skin against UV damage."

At the same time, the nutritionist pointed out that this substance is a fat-soluble nutrient. Therefore, it is beneficial to eat tomatoes marinated, for example, in olive oil. Furthermore, it is found within the cellular structures of tomatoes. When tomatoes are crushed and heated, this structure breaks down, making lycopene more readily absorbable.

Gusakova confirmed, saying: "It turns out that a greater amount of lycopene can be obtained from tomato paste, sauce or puree, compared to fresh tomatoes."

She also reminded me that tomatoes are one of the staple foods in the Mediterranean diet, which contributes to longevity.
