Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has broken his silence and spoken about the rumors that have recently linked him with taking over as manager of the Netherlands national team, following the dismissal of Ronald Koeman.
Slot's name has been linked to coaching the Netherlands in recent times, as the Dutch Football Association seeks to settle on a coach to lead the Oranje, after the failure under Koeman in the World Cup.
In statements to Voetbal International magazine, which were reported by BBC Sport, Slot admitted that the Dutch Football Association had negotiated with him to coach the national team, but he refused the job as he wanted to continue coaching a club.
“Over the past few weeks, and especially in the last few days, some reports have emerged regarding the Netherlands coaching position, indicating that I have declined to coach the national team, including regarding salary and contract duration. However, these speculations are incorrect, as we have notreached this stage of negotiation.”
"I have great respect for the national team and the Dutch Football Association, and I can only be positive about the professional way in which the talks were conducted during that week."
"At the moment I think coaching clubs is still better and offers me a lot in my career. It would be a great honor for me to coach my national team, but this is not the right time for me."
According to recent reports, former Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Koeman as Netherlands coach in the coming period.
