An international team of scientists has revealed the origin of the "Blood Falls" at the Taylor Glacier in East Antarctica.

It turned out that the crimson brine seeping from beneath the ice was nothing more than ancient seawater that had been trapped under the glacier for millions of years.

The water's red color is due to ferrous iron, which oxidizes upon contact with air, acquiring that distinctive hue. However, the source of this water remained a mystery that puzzled scientists for decades.

Researchers studied 167 samples of water, bottom sediments, and air from the falls and McMurdo Dry Valleys. Genetic analysis revealed that the brine and red sediments contained an unusually high percentage of eukaryotes associated with organisms that live in modern oceans—exceeding 9%—compared to less than 1% in other parts of the valleys.

Scientists also tested the hypothesis that these microscopic marine organisms were transported by wind, but the results showed that their presence in the air is extremely small and cannot explain the origin of this unique ecosystem, which reinforces the hypothesis that it evolved within an isolated underground reservoir.

According to initial estimates, seawater may have been trapped beneath the ice for over a million years . Scientists are now working to reconstruct the history of glacial movement in Antarctica and understand how life managed to survive in complete isolation and without light for so long.
