The Israeli army killed two Palestinians in two separate incidents in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, one of whom was a Palestinian police official, at a time when the ceasefire in the Strip continues to face increasing challenges amid ongoing Israeli strikes and the fall of martyrs and wounded.
The Interior Ministry in Gaza said that the Gaza Governorate Police Chief, Jamal Mahmoud Abu Kamil (43 years old), was killed when Israeli aircraft bombed his vehicle on Al-Rashid Street, southwest of Gaza City.
In a subsequent statement, the ministry said that the assassination of Abu Kamil “is a crime that represents a flagrant violation of international law, and a dangerous escalation that reflects the occupation’s insistence on continuing to target key aspects of civilian police work in the Gaza Strip, as part of attempts to create chaos.”
It considered this an “unjustified crime” that comes within the ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement “at a time when all parties are seeking to establish the agreement.”
The ministry indicated that the assassination confirms Israel’s deliberate attempt to “undermine the efforts of mediators and obstruct efforts to achieve calm,” and called on the international community and mediating countries to “intervene urgently to put an end to Israeli violations and stop targeting the police force.”
In a separate incident, medical sources at Nasser Hospital said that a Palestinian was killed on Thursday after the Israeli army targeted an electric bicycle in the Al-Amal neighborhood, west of Khan Younis city in the southern Gaza Strip.
Local sources reported that the martyr was Hudhaifa Kawara, whom they described as a company commander in the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas.
This comes amid continued tension in the Gaza Strip, despite the truce which aims to stop the fighting and create conditions for implementing the stages of the agreement related to consolidating the ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the exchange of detainees and prisoners, and the entry of humanitarian aid.
Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip had decreased in the past period, but incidents of gunfire, shelling and military operations are still being recorded from time to time, according to Palestinian sources.
The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the two incidents.
