The kidneys are not always the cause of swelling.

Urologist Victoria Sinotova noted that women complain of swelling without any chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or chronic heart failure.

According to her, however, many women experience swelling and often assume there are kidney problems. Is this always true?

The doctor explains that swelling isn't always caused by kidney problems, as swelling due to kidney dysfunction typically occurs when the kidneys have been impaired for many years. In addition to swelling, changes in the patient's blood and urine test results will inevitably be observed. The kidneys are dual organs, so they can function efficiently for a very long time, even when problems exist.

According to her, patients usually complain of some external changes, a feeling of swelling, and fatigue. But it should be noted that these symptoms are not related to kidney function. Swelling most often occurs when

1- The person is not consuming enough protein. Because when the body suffers from a protein deficiency, the amount of fluid between cells increases, causing bloating.

2 - Insufficient movement. Because without movement, the veins begin to function inefficiently, causing the person to feel heaviness and swelling in the legs.

3 - Not drinking enough water. When the body becomes dehydrated, it tries to retain water, causing swelling.

The specialist points out that during the second phase of the menstrual cycle, it's perfectly normal for women to experience some swelling. This is because progesterone levels rise during this period, affecting fluid retention within cells. This, in turn, causes the sensation of weight gain and bloating.

But according to her, if the swelling does not disappear, even with sufficient movement, protein intake, and water consumption, a doctor should be consulted.
