The Socotra desert rose: breathtaking beauty, healing medicine, and deadly poison all in one plant

Growing on the Yemeni island of Socotra is a tree that looks like it came out of a child's imagination, with a trunk swollen like a bottle, thin branches, and bright pink flowers. 

This tree is known locally as the "bottle tree" or "bottle tree" (because its swollen, thick trunk at the base resembles the shape of a bottle), and it is also called the "Socotra desert rose" (Adenium obesum). This beautiful plant holds a striking contradiction: it is both a medicine and a poison.

The Socotra desert rose grows exclusively on the rocky terrain of Socotra Island in the Indian Ocean. Its trunk can reach a diameter of about 2.4 meters at the base, making it resemble a giant water bottle placed on the ground. This bulge is a natural adaptation that allows the plant to store water in its trunk and roots to withstand long periods of drought. After months of appearing as an unusual desert wonder, it transforms, from early March to late April, into a breathtaking display of pink and white flowers.

The desert rose belongs to the Apocynaceae family of plants, known for their latex and bioactive compounds, most notably cardiac glycosides. When the plant is wounded, it releases a milky white sap containing these compounds, which affect the heart. Paradoxically, in small amounts, these compounds can increase the force of heart contractions while slowing the heart rate, making them potentially useful in treating certain types of heart failure. However, an overdose can lead to vomiting, blurred vision, and serious heart rhythm disturbances that can be fatal to both humans and animals.

In fact, there are subtypes of desert flower that are known in some regions more than others.

In northern Tanzania, the Hadza people traditionally used the sap of this plant to poison their hunting arrows for buffalo, giraffes, and birds. Other communities also used it to poison fish and pests. A scientific review published in 2024 indicates that the plant has a wide range of uses in different regions, including treating skin problems, wounds, earaches, tooth decay, lice, and various infections. 

It has also been used in the treatment of malaria and parasites, but the precise effectiveness of these uses still needs further studies.

Studies have identified dozens of compounds in the desert rose, some of which exhibit antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and anticancer activity. However, researchers emphasize that some of these compounds are also toxic, making their medical use extremely cautious. One review identified 53 compounds from previous research but stressed the toxicity of some of them.

In some traditions, the plant's sap is believed to be effective in treating illnesses caused by "the evil eye" and is used as a protective amulet against evil spirits and malicious people. In some Buddhist ceremonies, the stems, leaves, and flowers of the plant are used as offerings, while in Indonesia, its flowers are associated with cemetery visits and remembrance of the dead. The desert rose is also cultivated as an ornamental plant, and its flowers are used in eco-printing to transfer natural dyes to fabrics.

In another contrast, the Polka-dot Wasp Moth feeds on desert rose leaves during its caterpillar stage. In turn, this moth becomes one of the plant's primary pollinators, alongside the night-moth, in a unique symbiotic relationship.

In conclusion, the Socotra desert rose is not just an oddly shaped plant, but a world of contradictions: breathtaking beauty, a natural water reservoir, a traditional medicine, a deadly poison, a religious symbol, and a hunting tool.
