Will Infantino lose his right to run? A new development before the FIFA elections

The non-profit organization FairSquare has called on FIFA's Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee to prevent current president Gianni Infantino from running in the next election for the organization's presidency.

The organization believes that the next term will be Infantino's fourth, while FIFA regulations stipulate that the same person cannot hold the presidency of the federation for more than three terms.

Infantino maintains that his first term should not be counted towards the maximum, as he was elected during it in February 2016 through an extraordinary FIFA congress.

The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 2027, amid growing controversy over Infantino's future in office.

FairSquare's demand comes at a time when the FIFA president is facing other criticisms, including the issue of overturning the suspension of US national team striker Folarin Balogun, after reports indicated that US President Donald Trump contacted Infantino and asked for a review of the penalty, which Trump later confirmed.

Disagreements also escalated between Infantino and a number of continental federations, especially after his proposal to sell a share of the World Cup rights to private sector investors, an idea that was rejected by UEFA and a number of other continental federations.

Infantino was elected FIFA president in 2016, and was then re-elected twice unopposed. He is currently 56 years old.
