A research team affiliated with the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission has been granted a patent for developing a locally made light irradiation device that uses different wavelengths and doses and is used in research related to cancer treatment.

The media office of the Atomic Energy Commission revealed to the SANA news agency that the team succeeded in designing and manufacturing a “photoirradiation device with different wavelengths and doses,” which is a fully local device manufactured within the laboratories of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission, with the aim of applying photodynamic therapy in research on cancer cells.

He pointed out that this device, which is the first of its kind in Syria, is designed based on reverse engineering technology. The researchers also equipped it with an advanced light source of LED lamps with red, green, and yellow lights. This source ensures a homogeneous and high-precision light distribution that is compatible with the 96-well cell culture plates, and within a specific power that allows the application of the required doses accurately to the targeted cells using standard photosensitive compounds.

According to the media office, laboratory testing of the device in glass proved its complete efficiency and effectiveness in accordance with the highest internationally recognized standards and criteria.

The media office of the authority confirmed that this invention represents a significant leap forward for scientific and medical research in Syria, as it allows, for the first time at the local level, an advanced technology for cancer treatment research using national efforts and expertise, reducing the need for complex and expensive imported equipment.

The office also considered that the added value of this innovation lies in the fact that it opened the door for Syrian researchers to expand studies in photodynamic therapy and develop new therapeutic compounds and preparations for tumors, which directly contributes to enhancing health security and supports the state’s strategy of localizing technology and supporting scientific innovation to meet medical challenges with highly efficient local alternatives.
