Olga Mironova, a doctoral candidate in educational sciences from Nizhny Novgorod Linguistic University, tested how artificial intelligence can help teachers teach English in schools.
The researcher conducted an experiment in the fifth and sixth grades at Domodedovo School No. 3 in the Moscow region.
Fifth-grade students studied the topic of "Home" according to the officially prescribed curriculum, while sixth-grade students studied it using the ChatGPT and Perplexity neural networks. The two classes then switched roles, with the aim of comparing the two approaches, not the children's abilities.
Artificial intelligence developed the lesson plans, selected the words, created the exercises, and produced the images, while the teacher took over the selection and review of the materials himself.
The study authors noted that artificial intelligence made tasks more varied and reduced the time needed to prepare similar exercises. Visual materials also helped children memorize words better. For example, to create an image using DreamAI, students had to write detailed instructions in English, which prompted them to use the new vocabulary again.
The researchers pointed to the risks of plagiarism and the lack of trust some teachers have in this technology. However, they believe that artificial intelligence is useful, not as a replacement for the teacher, but as a tool to be used by them.
