A study conducted by Chinese scientists and published in the journal FCM showed that water exercise helps lower blood pressure in older adults.
During the study, the researchers analyzed the results of four randomized studies related to aquatic exercise and its effect on health, and noted that aquatic exercise includes physical training performed in a swimming pool, such as walking, aerobics and other training movements, and not regular swimming.
The results showed that these exercises reduced, on average, systolic blood pressure by about 11 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure by about 6 mmHg, and also reduced the pulse rate by about six beats per minute. All of these changes were statistically significant.
The researchers pointed out that exercising in water helps to activate the cardiovascular system without causing any stress on the joints like traditional exercise, making it a suitable option for the elderly, so it can be considered a promising addition to treating high blood pressure problems.
A study conducted by scientists from the Federal University of Sao Paulo showed that swimming is more beneficial to heart health than running, and that its effect is stronger than running on the activity of microRNA, molecules that regulate cell growth and blood vessel formation, and protect the heart from damage.
