A woman has recently been making headlines on social media due to a bizarre medical incident that may be shocking to coffee lovers
A young woman named Tai recounted that she recently consulted her doctor about digestive problems she was experiencing. In a video she posted on TikTok, she said, "The doctors thought I had Crohn's disease, gluten intolerance, blood pressure problems, every diagnosis imaginable."
But these persistent digestive problems were not caused by any of these diseases, but rather by the cup of coffee she drank daily.
The biggest surprise was that the culprit was not the coffee itself, but the cochineal insect, which is used in some types of ground coffee to add the red color. It is a scale insect that lives on aloe vera and is crushed to produce the dye "carmine" or "Natural Red 4", which is found in many foods, drinks and cosmetics.
In addition to this deliberately added insect, reports revealed that coffee may contain other insects that entered it accidentally during processing, roasting and grinding on a large industrial scale.
Tai explained that the doctor told her that this insect caused her an allergy, although "a little protein doesn't harm anyone, but in her case it was harming her."
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows up to 10% of green coffee beans to be infected or damaged by insects. Common pests include the coffee bean borer beetle, which can be found at all stages of its life cycle, as well as its excrement (feces and shed skin) in the coffee; the coffee bean weevil, which enters the coffee during storage; and the warehouse beetle, which likes stored foods such as coffee. Mold, fungi, and other foreign matter may also be present.
Despite widespread rumors about cockroaches in coffee, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that cockroaches are not permitted in coffee and that the evidence for their presence is weak. Tests indicate the presence of other insects, not specifically cockroaches. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, experts recommend buying whole coffee beans and grinding them at home to ensure control over the quality of your coffee and avoid any unwanted additives or contaminants.
