A new study has shown that adding the drug "Lomatibron" to antidepressants may improve symptoms of depression and sexual function in patients who have not responded adequately to treatment.
The study included 480 patients with major depressive disorder, some of whom received a daily dose of 42 mg of lomatibron in addition to antidepressants, while others received a placebo. After 43 days of treatment, the group receiving lomatibron showed a significant improvement in depressive symptoms and sexual function compared to the other group.
The improvements encompassed several aspects of sexual function, including desire, arousal, orgasm, and pleasure. 82.5% of participants experienced sexual dysfunction at the start of the study, while more than a quarter reported a return to normal sexual function by the end of the treatment period.
The improvement was observed in both men and women, with women showing a greater benefit; however, the researchers stressed the need for further studies to confirm this difference. Patients of both sexes also reported improvements in sexual pleasure and arousal.
The study was led by Dr. Anita H. Clayton, a psychiatrist at UVA Health, and its findings were published in the journal Clinical Psychiatry.
According to researchers, approximately 68% of people with major depressive disorder experience sexual dysfunction. This dysfunction is not solely related to depression itself; it can also be a side effect of some antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which may lead some patients to discontinue their medication.
Lomatibron is known as a second-generation antipsychotic drug, used to treat schizophrenia and depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder. It is also used as an adjunct to antidepressants in adults with major depressive disorder when improvement alone is not sufficient.
The study results suggest that adding lomatibron may be a treatment option for some patients who do not respond adequately to antidepressants, particularly those concerned about sexual dysfunction. However, the results do not mean the drug will improve sexual function in all patients, and further research is needed to confirm these findings.
