A scientific review has shown that aerobic exercise after cancer treatment may reduce the risk of disease recurrence and death, indicating the importance of physical activity as part of post-treatment care.
The review included approximately 8,500 participants in 123 studies and 21 clinical trials. Researchers found that patients who exercised after treatment were 23% less likely to die and 17% less likely to experience cancer recurrence before death. They also had an 18% lower risk of death from any cause and a 26% lower risk of death from cancer.
Cancer recurs in between 20% and 40% of patients, even after undergoing chemotherapy and surgical removal of tumors.
Exercise has long been used to help cancer patients relieve fatigue and improve mobility, but its effect on the risk of disease recurrence has remained a subject of research.
The review, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, suggests that exercise may help the body fight cancer by improving the efficiency of the cardiovascular system, stimulating immune cell activity, and improving blood flow to tumors.
Researchers also believe that physical activity may affect the levels of certain hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone, increase muscle absorption of glucose, and may also help cells repair DNA damage.
Breast cancer was the most common type in the studies included in the review, followed by bowel cancer and pancreatic cancer.
Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said new evidence suggests exercise may help people with cancer live longer, healthier lives, stressing the importance of survivors receiving support to engage in physical activity when appropriate.
Aerobic exercises include jogging, running, cycling, swimming, and dancing, while strength training exercises include weightlifting, squats, and push-ups.
However, patients' ability to exercise varies depending on their health condition and the type of treatment they have undergone, so it is advisable to talk to a doctor to determine safe and appropriate activities for each case.
