Meta plans to launch new smart glasses without a camera, following a wave of criticism that its current glasses have faced for being used to photograph people without their consent.
The current Meta glasses contain a front-facing camera that allows the user to record what they see. Artificial intelligence can also use this camera to understand what is happening around the wearer.
But the problem is that some people have used them to secretly photograph others, which has led to them being dubbed "harassment glasses" (or perverted glasses).
The new glasses, internally named "Luna," will do away with the camera entirely. Instead, they will rely primarily on voice to interact with artificial intelligence, with six built-in microphones providing real-time information. The absence of a camera also means the glasses will be thinner and have a longer battery life.
Meta will also announce an updated version of its camera-equipped glasses, focusing on preventing misuse. The company has released an update that prevents users from disabling the recording LED light that illuminates during recording. Alex Hemel, Meta's vice president of augmented reality, said, "The camera won't start recording if the light is blocked. Some people try to start recording and then cover the light. We've started rolling out a fix for that—the camera will stop working if the light is covered during recording." Another update will also be released that will disable the glasses if the recording light is physically tampered with.
These products are expected to be announced at the Meta Connect event scheduled for September 23-24. The event will also include the unveiling of new augmented reality glasses with functions similar to Apple's Vision Pro headset.
