Summers stated that member states have ample room to express their views before the General Assembly, while respecting the rules of procedure, emphasizing that the United Nations is "a home for dialogue and freedom of expression." She added that she reiterated the President of the General Assembly's desire for member states to respect "the dignity and solemnity of the General Assembly Hall and the occasion," but clarified that she had no information regarding the content of his bilateral meetings with relevant parties.
In reviewing the proceedings of the high-level week of the General Assembly, held from September 22 to 28, Summers said that 194 delegations participated in the general debate, including 113 heads of state and government, along with vice presidents, heads of government, and ministers. Preliminary figures showed that women comprised approximately 14 percent of speakers, a slight increase from last year.
She noted that over 60 percent of the speakers addressed artificial intelligence, while nearly three-quarters discussed climate issues. Five high-level meetings were also held, including one on the complete elimination of nuclear weapons, along with the annual meeting of the General Assembly's Platform of Women Leaders, in partnership with UN Women.
Speaking about the theme of the current session, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transition, and a United Nations that Delivers Results for All,” Summers said the topic had received broad engagement from member states.
The President of the General Assembly was quoted as calling for “calm reflection, clear realism, and pragmatism” in dealing with the challenges and opportunities facing the United Nations, with a focus on UN action at the field level.
Summers said the President of the General Assembly renewed his call for Security Council reform, particularly strengthening African representation, using the phrase "Africa must be at the table, not just on the agenda," referring to the need to enhance the continent's participation in the Council's decision-making process.
