A study published in the journal "Alcohol and Alcoholism" showed that alcohol consumption, even in small amounts, may be associated with a decline in motor coordination with age.
The study included 83 healthy, non-smoking individuals, aged between 21 and 69, who consumed alcohol within the currently recommended limits. Researchers assessed their fine motor skills, speed of movement, hand-eye coordination, and balance.
The results showed that higher lifetime alcohol consumption was associated with lower performance on tests of manual dexterity and complex motor coordination, and decreased body stability was observed when tested with closed eyes in people who had consumed larger amounts of alcohol over their lifetime.
The researchers did not notice differences in the effect of alcohol between men or women, as this association was observed in both sexes.
The researchers noted that the results do not prove that alcohol directly causes impaired motor coordination, but they do show that even consumption levels previously considered low risk may be associated with changes in motor functions.
Doctors generally advise staying away from alcoholic beverages because of their negative effects on the health of the liver, kidneys, nervous system, and heart and arteries.
