A study published in the journal Nutrients showed a link between drinking Tibetan butter tea and improved mental and cognitive abilities.
The researchers studied data from 7,967 Tibetan residents aged 10 to 24, assessed their consumption of Tibetan butter tea , and tested the participants' cognitive abilities using the standard Raven's test.
The results showed that people who drank butter tea occasionally or regularly were less likely to score low on cognitive tests compared to those who did not drink it, with the risk decreasing by 21% with intermittent consumption of the beverage, and by 29% with regular consumption.
Tibetan butter tea is prepared from tea leaves, butter, and salt. Despite its high fat and salt content, the drink contains beneficial substances from the tea leaves, including polyphenols and antioxidants that may affect the functioning of the nervous system.
The researchers point out that the results only show an association between consuming Tibetan butter tea and cognitive indicators, and do not prove a direct effect of the drink on brain function.
