Some experts believe that fears of artificial intelligence getting out of control are greatly exaggerated.
Talk of artificial intelligence poised to take over the world has resurfaced. Who stands to benefit from this?
New Scientist magazine asked experts to provide realistic estimates of what is happening.
Mary Aitken, one of the founders of Our AI Collective, asserted that "what's out of control is not the machines, but the people who make them. Current models cannot improve themselves. If they could, that would be precisely the mark of true uniqueness."
The expert said: "There is no concrete evidence of that. If there were something that powerful, we would have already seen its manifestations."
Physicist Andrew Rogowski of the University of Surrey added that the hype benefits developers who create a buzz and attract investment. Talk of "slowing down," on the other hand, helps companies slow their pace without losing out to their competitors.
The scientist quipped, "Do we really need a trillion dollars to make artificial intelligence a better presentation?"
He explained: "The everyday tasks that models perform so skillfully do not need further expansion, so tech giants would like to slow down and start increasing efficiency, reducing costs and increasing revenues."
However, he said the threat of superintelligence is not huge, but it is real. We'd better prepare for it.
