British chess player Budhana Sivanandan made history when, at the age of 11, she became the youngest female chess player in history to earn the title of Grandmaster.
Sivanandan, who is of Indian origin, specifically from a family that hails from the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India, achieved this feat during the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, after playing all 11 rounds on the first board with the English team, and scoring 8 points.
With this achievement, the British player broke the previous record held by Ekaterina Lagno, who was awarded the title of Women's Grandmaster in 2002 at the age of 12.
Sivanandan began playing chess during the lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, before making her first appearance in a tournament in 2021.
In 2023, she became the youngest player in history to go undefeated against a grandmaster in a competitive match, and then in 2024, at the age of nine, she was chosen to represent England at the Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, becoming the youngest athlete to represent her country on the international stage in any sport.
The title of Women's Grandmaster is the highest title in women's chess, and is awarded for life by the International Chess Federation, with players retaining their right to compete for the title of Absolute Grandmaster.
