The word "allow" on a phone screen may seem like a simple step to start using a new app, but it could open the door to various types of user data, depending on the app's nature, the permissions it requests, and its design. While some functions genuinely need access to location, camera, or photos, other data might be related to advertising, analytics, and tracking digital activity.

Installing an application or granting it a single permission does not mean that the developer automatically gets all of the phone's data. Modern operating systems place various restrictions on access to sensitive information and allow the user to manage permissions. However, the range of data that can be collected is not determined by permissions alone, as some information may be collected in ways that do not require special permission from the system.
Location, photos, and contact information
Geographic location is among the most sensitive data for applications. Some apps may request precise or approximate location to provide location-related services, while operating systems offer users various options for controlling this access. On Android, for example, location data and contacts are considered private user data subject to permission controls.
It is not limited to the location provided by the GPS system, as Android documentation explains that some of the applications or libraries included in it may infer location information from the Internet Protocol (IP) address or the name of the access point, methods that do not necessarily rely on the permission of the location itself.
As for photos and files, access to them varies depending on the operating system and how the application requests permission. Apple, for example, offers the option to grant an application access to specific photos instead of opening the entire photo library, in cases where the system supports this.
Sensitive permissions also include the camera, microphone, and contacts, as access to these can reveal personal information or allow the app to use sensors to record content. Therefore, operating systems have specific mechanisms in place for requesting and managing these permissions.

Ironically, the permissions window doesn't show the user all the data an app might handle. The permissions list in Google Play describes the data or functions an app can access, while the "Data Security" section explains what the developer declares they collect or share. Google says the two lists can differ; an app might process data on the device without collecting or sharing it, or it might collect information in ways not governed by the permissions.
Here, another category of data appears, such as device and connection information, certain identifiers, and usage data. This information may be used for operational, security, analytical, or advertising purposes, depending on the application, its practices, and its privacy policy.
