The smartphone industry is witnessing a massive shift in the landscape, with Chinese brands no longer mere tailwinds in the market. They have now transformed into leading forces, continually surprising with various technological innovations in camera features.

Chinese manufacturers are daring to push the boundaries between mobile photography and professional-grade camera quality, bringing previously unthinkable sophistication to a handheld device.
The innovations presented are no joke and often exceed public expectations. Consumers are now presented with technological leaps forward through phones like the Honor Robot Phone, which features a unique camera movement mechanism, and premium, high-spec devices like the vivo X500.
The presence of this line of cutting-edge phones is clear evidence that Chinese vendors are overhauling the standards of photography features in the modern era.
"Giant" Sensors
This extraordinary transformation has triggered a fundamental trend shift in the industry. Aditya (37), a technology journalist in Jakarta, revealed that the era of the resolution race is starting to end. "The biggest trend is the shift from the 'megapixel war' to the 'sensor size war' and exclusive collaborations," said Aditya.
According to Aditya, instead of continuing to chase bombastic numbers like 108 or 200 megapixels, Chinese manufacturers are now focusing on embedding giant 1-inch sensors into the body of the phone. He explained that the larger sensor size aims to capture more light. As a result, photos have a very wide dynamic range and captures in low-light conditions look clean without having to use artificial brightness effects.
Strategic engineering with global optical giants like Leica, Hasselblad, and Zeiss is also the ultimate weapon. Aditya emphasized that this step has entered the very technical realm and is not just a cosmetic gimmick to boost sales.
Another hardware leap that is no less revolutionary recently is the presence of a periscope telephoto lens. Aditya explained that the Chinese manufacturer uses a smart design containing a horizontal lens array and a light-deflecting prism to produce a pure optical zoom of 5x to 10x without making the back of the phone bulge as thick as a brick.
The lens technology is now continuing to develop to present a telemacro feature equipped with a shifting lens element which is claimed to be able to capture super close details with bokeh effects similar to shots from professional mirrorless cameras.
Aditya projects that the physical limitations of hardware will eventually trigger a new battle in the realm of computational photography supported by generative artificial intelligence (AI). He believes that AI systems in the future will not only be tasked with smoothing faces, but also be able to reconstruct the texture of objects that are lost instantly when users do an extreme 100x zoom, to manipulating the direction of sunlight on objects in real-time.
