The Geological Survey of Denmark (GEUS) reported that the ice sheet in Greenland, which makes up about 80% of its area, is shrinking for the thirtieth year in a row.
Researchers describe this melting as a "climate signal." The ice sheet mass had previously increased during the 1995/1996 season. Since then, its decline has not stopped, and this melting is not a short-term fluctuation.
According to the latest GEUS calculations, Greenland's ice sheet lost approximately 173 billion tons of ice during the 2025/2026 season and about 130 billion tons during the 2024/2025 season. These are significant amounts, but not a record high; in 2012, the ice loss reached approximately 458 billion tons.
“Weather conditions in a single year can be influenced by many factors, so they cannot determine long-term climate trends,” said Sini Hellerup Larsen, a researcher in the Department of Glaciology and Climate. “That is why researchers usually study a 30-year period when they need to draw conclusions about the climate. However, the Greenland ice sheet has been shrinking for 30 consecutive years, which strongly illustrates the grim picture that global warming is accelerating melting and leading to a gradual shrinkage of the Greenland ice sheet.”
The melting of ice caps contributes to rising sea levels on the planet. Since ice is fresh water, the consequences could be far more widespread. "Many are concerned that releasing fresh water into the ocean could affect global ocean currents, which in turn influence the salinity balance," explained Hillerup Larsen in an interview with the Ritzau news agency. "Many are closely monitoring the Atlantic Ocean Current (AMOC), a tropical-reversal Atlantic circulation that brings warm water to our region and is, in fact, responsible for the higher temperatures in Scandinavia compared to other similar latitudes."
