EV sales in Australia hit a new record high in August

Electric vehicle  sales in Australia hit a new record high in August 2026 as the popularity of Chinese cars continues to rise, according to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

The FCAI  that battery electric vehicles  accounted for 24.9 percent of total new vehicle sales nationwide in August, surpassing the previous record of 23.3 percent set in June.

This marks the fourth consecutive month that BEVs accounted for at least 20 percent of total new vehicle sales, having achieved this milestone for the first time in May amidst soaring fuel prices.

The FCAI stated that BEV sales in August increased 171 percent from August 2025.

According to the data, Chinese automakers BYD, GWM, MG, Geely, and Chery were among the top 10 most popular brands in Australia in August.

BYD delivered 8,231 new vehicles to customers in Australia in August, ranking second among all manufacturers and second only to Toyota, compared with 4,877 units in August 2025.

Geely sold 4,504 new vehicles in Australia in the same month, a jump of more than 1,000 percent from the 401 units sold in August 2025.

FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said the Australian automotive market is undergoing significant structural change.

The sustained level of BEV sales, coupled with changing brand preferences, demonstrates how rapidly consumer choice and competition are reshaping the Australian new vehicle market, Weber said.
