A study published in the journal Nature Biotechnology showed that the experimental pulmonary fibrosis drug "Rintocertib" demonstrated the ability to reduce biological age.
During the study, researchers analyzed blood samples from 42 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis who participated in a 12-week clinical trial. Some volunteers received different doses of the drug "Rintocertib," while the rest received a placebo. Scientists measured levels of more than 2,800 proteins and assessed the biological age of the participants using six algorithms known as "protein clocks," which are algorithms that determine age based on the composition of blood proteins.
All six algorithms showed a decrease in calculated biological age in those who took the drug compared to the placebo group, with the most pronounced effect observed when 30 mg of the drug was taken twice daily.
Scientists observed that the drug altered the levels of 326 proteins, with the levels of some proteins associated with cell aging and scar tissue formation decreasing, while the levels of proteins associated with metabolism and protecting cells from stress increased.
The researchers believe that the results allow for the study of "Rintocertip" not only as a treatment for pulmonary fibrosis, but also as a potential drug that affects aging processes.
