First successful robot-assisted double liver and kidney transplant in the United States

Specialists from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the Barnes Hospital Organ Transplant Center performed the first robot-assisted double liver and kidney transplant.

Both procedures required a single incision of only about 7.5 centimeters, whereas the incision in traditional open surgical implant procedures is 40-50 centimeters long.

The patient who underwent this unique surgery was 59-year-old Darrell Bosworth from Missouri. He had suffered kidney failure as a result of cirrhosis of the liver, his weight had dropped to about 32 kilograms, and he was bedridden and on dialysis, which caused him to experience mental confusion. Three weeks later, suitable donor organs were found for him.

The surgery was performed by Professor Adil Khan, who previously performed the first robotic kidney transplant in the United States in 2020 and the first robotic liver transplant in 2023. He was assisted by Associate Professor Jessica Lindeman from the Barnes-Jewish Transplant Center.

Initially, the surgeons transplanted the donor's liver, a procedure that took approximately eight hours. During the surgery, Adil Khan used a robotic control unit equipped with a 3D screen. The following morning, the surgeons transplanted the kidney using the same incision, a procedure that took an additional six hours.

According to a press release from the medical school, the patient's body accepted both organs. By the tenth day, he had regained his mental clarity, and two weeks later he was able to walk and climb stairs. Bosworth noted that he experienced minimal pain.
