The life of a Ugandan goalkeeper playing in the amateur football league in England took an amazing turn when he was officially elected king of the Toro tribe in the kingdom of Uganda, located in East Africa.
George Desmond Camorase, known in England as "Big G", who plays for AC Dons in the amateur league (ninth division), became the first footballer to hold a senior position in his country while continuing his sporting activity.
According to English news reports, Desmond Kamurase suddenly found himself crowned king of the Toro kingdom in Uganda, which has more than one million people and is a traditional kingdom in Uganda but has something of its own internal system.
It is known that Uganda has a presidential political system, but like some countries in West, Central and East Africa, it includes traditional kingdoms overseen by the king, and resembles tribes that sometimes number in the millions.
George Desmond Camorase, 36, lives in southeast London. He is a goalkeeper and captain of SE Dons, a club that competes in the ninth tier (amateur) of England.
Besides football, the goalkeeper has a stable life in London with his wife and son. He comes from an African royal lineage, being the grandson of the late Ugandan King George Rukidi III, who hosted Queen Elizabeth II of Britain in Uganda in 1954, according to the British newspaper The Telegraph.
In early September 2026, Big G's life took a dramatic turn when he unexpectedly became the leader of more than one million people from the Toro tribe in the African nation.
Kamurase was chosen to be the new "Omokama" (i.e., king) of the local kingdom in Uganda, following the death of his cousin who had previously held this position.
In early September, Kamurasi's cousin, King Oyo, died after a battle with cancer at the age of 34. Since the late king left no direct heir, the 21-member Royal Succession Council of the Toro Kingdom convened to choose the next leader, with the goalkeeper becoming the new king.
In a vote held on September 4, 2026, the council voted overwhelmingly (15 votes against 3) to elect goalkeeper Kamorase to be the next king of the Kingdom of Toro.
The almost unbelievable events did not stop there. One day after his coronation as king in Uganda, Kamurase went down to the field as normal and led his team, SE Dons, to a (2-0) victory in an FA Amateur Cup match, amid the pride of his teammates and the club’s fans, whose team captain had officially become king, and maintained his stardom in the team.
Kamorasey has not yet commented publicly on the news of his selection, while the website "Spy Uganda" reported, citing sources familiar with the succession process, that he is considering leaving his sporting career in London to take on this role.
