Alexander Gintsburg, the scientific director of Russia’s Gamaleya Research Center, announced that the new vaccine that protects against tuberculosis is currently in the third phase of clinical trials.
Gintsburg told TASS: "It is well known that tuberculosis, like other infectious diseases, is best avoided rather than vaccinated against. Currently, the Gamaleya Institute has completed the third phase of clinical trials for a tuberculosis vaccine that prevents the infection itself."
He added that the statistical processing of data obtained from several thousand patients is currently underway, stressing that the results are promising.
Before drugs can be registered, they undergo three phases of clinical trials. In the first phase, scientists verify the drug's safety for humans, and between 20 and 80 healthy volunteers are selected as test subjects. In the second phase, 100-300 people with the disease for which the drug was developed participate.
In the third phase, the sample expands to include several thousand people of different ages and genders to confirm the benefit on a large scale. The fourth phase is conducted after the drug is registered and marketed, and aims to track the drug's long-term effects and study its potential combination with other medications.
