He also predicted that China would join calls for AI safety because it does not want to be the target of AI-enhanced attacks, noting that Trump might change his position after listening to him and others working in the technology.

He pointed out that the process of regulating artificial intelligence and setting controls for it should not be the preserve of a particular group, as "law enforcement agencies and politicians should be involved in the discussion about the form of controls, and this should be mandatory."

Gates thus joins tech leaders who have called for regulatory frameworks for the artificial intelligence sector and a slowdown in its development, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk , as well as US Senator Bernie Sanders, who proposed a bill to temporarily suspend the development of advanced artificial intelligence on September 23, according to The Guardian.

The stop button is not enough

Regarding calls to develop a stop or kill button for artificial intelligence technologies to be used when they get out of control, Gates stressed that this is not enough.

He explained that this stop button cannot replace censorship in the early stages of developing artificial intelligence technologies, noting that the technology has not yet been developed to take over computers against the will of humans, and described those who call for the development of this button as "lacking technical understanding."
