Meta is aiming to redefine the form of virtual reality devices with its new “Meta VR Glasses,” which it announced on September 23, with a design closer to traditional glasses and a weight of about 100 grams.

Meta says the device represents an attempt to deliver an immersive virtual reality experience without relying on the usual heavy headsets.
Meta's new design features a relatively open-sided headset, unlike the full-body structure that surrounds the user's head in devices like the Meta Quest 3. The headset weighs approximately 100 grams, which the company claims is about five times lighter than the Quest 3. Passthrough cameras also allow the user to see their surroundings in color while interacting with virtual content.
But achieving this weight did not come from miniaturizing all the components inside the glasses. Meta divided the device into two parts. The glasses themselves contain the screens and sensors, while the processing, battery, and storage were moved to a small unit that can be put in a pocket or attached to a bag and connects to the glasses via an optical link. Thus, the head carries the lighter part, while the external unit handles the larger part of the computing and power components.
Micro OLED screens and higher resolution
The glasses use Micro-OLED displays within what Meta calls a 5K Infinite Display, with a pixel density of 37 pixels per inch and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, while using built-in pancake lenses designed to reduce the size of the system and maintain image clarity.
The screen supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG technologies, while sound comes through two built-in speakers that support Dolby Atmos. Each eye has a resolution of 2412×2288 pixels, according to the official Meta specifications table.
However, the glasses have a horizontal field of view of 70 degrees, compared to 110 degrees in the MetaQuest 3, which is an important difference in the nature of the experience, as the new glasses offer a lighter design that is closer to the shape of glasses, while the Quest 3 gives a wider field of view.
Meta adopts a different way of interacting with content. The glasses are equipped with eye and hand tracking technologies. Sight is the primary targeting method, while finger-folding is used for selection. The user can also speak to Meta AI to execute commands such as playing a movie, opening an application, or modifying the workspace.
