Eye doctors have warned that eyelash extensions may increase the risk of Demodex mites accumulating around the eyelashes, which can cause itching, redness, irritation, peeling skin, and blurred vision.
A study by ophthalmologist Tetiana Zmud and her team found that this mite was present in 24 out of 25 women who regularly had eyelash extensions fitted, or 96%.
The study included 345 women aged 16 to 28, and half of the participants reported having hair extensions inserted every three to four weeks, or about 17 times a year. 48% of them also reported experiencing discomfort, redness, or itching after the procedure.
Another examination showed that 85% of women who had eyelash extensions at least ten times suffered from blocked eyelid glands or reduced secretion of oils necessary to keep the eye moist.
Demodex mites are common among adults and usually fall off naturally from eyelashes without causing problems. However, a large accumulation of them can lead to eye infections.
Researchers believe that eyelash extensions may provide an environment that helps mites to multiply, as dead skin cells and glue residue accumulate around the base of the eyelashes, and eyelash extensions may prevent the natural removal of dead mites.
Professor Sorsha Ny-Duvgail, chair of the cornea committee at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, said that detecting mites can be more difficult for users of eyelash extensions because the adhesive is applied close to the area where waxy "rings" that reveal the presence of mites typically appear. (Waxy rings are deposits and scales that accumulate around the base of the eyelashes and are a sign that may indicate the presence of Demodex mites.)
Zamoud urged attention to eyelid hygiene and to be alert to warning signs. She also recommended that women who regularly have extensions fitted clean their eyelids twice a day using a gentle cleanser and a brush specifically for eyelashes.
