Many people experience hunger after exercising, and this can sometimes lead them to eat a larger meal than they had planned.
However, studies show that feeling hungry after exercise does not necessarily mean that exercise increases appetite, as appetite is temporarily affected by physical activity, while the energy expenditure during exercise may lead to a real feeling of hunger later.
Studies indicate that exercise suppresses appetite for a short period by lowering the hunger hormone ghrelin and increasing certain hormones that promote satiety. However, this effect typically fades within 30 to 90 minutes, after which appetite returns to its usual levels.
Regular exercise does not appear to lead to a significant increase in food intake to compensate for the energy expended. Some people may feel hungrier, but this does not necessarily mean they will consume the same number of calories they burned during exercise.
Moderate and high-intensity exercise temporarily suppresses appetite, and the effect may be slightly greater after high-intensity exercise, but the differences are not consistent.
Therefore, you don't need to choose a specific exercise to control your appetite. What's most important is to engage in an activity you enjoy and can maintain regularly.
The reason may simply be that the body has consumed a larger amount of energy, and subsequently responds by increasing the feeling of hunger to restore energy balance.
But other factors may lead to eating more food, including the feeling that exercise "deserves" a reward, or confusing thirst with hunger due to fluid loss.
If you feel hungry after a workout, start by drinking water, then assess whether you're truly hungry. When you do feel hungry, don't ignore it; instead, choose a filling snack that contains protein, fiber, and healthy fats.
Suitable options include: yogurt with fruit, eggs with wholegrain bread, a handful of nuts, hummus with vegetables, or milk.
Generally, feeling hungry after exercise doesn't mean the workout was ineffective; it may simply be a natural response to the body's energy expenditure. The best approach is to maintain regular physical activity and choose filling and nutritious foods after exercise.
