The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control announced that 1,086 locally acquired cases of West Nile virus have been recorded in 15 European countries since the start of the current transmission season until September 3.
The center explained, in its latest weekly update, that the rate of infections has accelerated significantly, as the number did not exceed 241 cases in seven countries at the beginning of August.
Italy recorded the highest number of cases with a total of 516 infections, followed by Greece with 284 cases and Spain with 88. The virus has spread to 144 European regions, including 62 regions in Italy, with the center noting that the figures do not necessarily provide a complete picture of the extent of transmission.
West Nile virus is mainly transmitted between wild birds via mosquitoes, but infected mosquitoes can transmit the infection to humans.
