Iran plans to detain a number of ships that violate regulations while crossing the Strait of Hormuz until the ships pay a fine of 20 percent of the value of their cargo.
The statement was made by the Spokesman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Hassan Ghashghavi.
"Based on the provisions approved by the committee for the new draft law on the Strait of Hormuz, ships that commit violations while passing through the strait will be subject to a fine of 20 percent of the value of their cargo, as well as temporary detention of the ship until the fine is paid," Ghashghavi
In mid-September 2026, the Persian Gulf Straits Authority (PGSA) said Iran had increased its list of vessels potentially subject to restrictive measures in the Strait of Hormuz to 77.
Ghashghavi added that the parliament is also seeking to require the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces or the Ministry of Defense to submit a report on the implementation of the law after it comes into force every three months.
In September, Ghashghavi also told RIA Novosti that Iran's parliament was still reviewing a draft law on the Strait of Hormuz, while a relevant committee was in the process of approving some of its provisions.
