The French League's disciplinary committee decided to suspend Monaco's German striker Paris Brunner for four matches, two of which are suspended, because of the way he celebrated his goal against Strasbourg.
Bruner, 20, scored Monaco's equalizer in the 72nd minute of the 1-1 draw, before putting his thumb to his neck in front of the home fans, in a gesture the committee deemed unsportsmanlike conduct.
Following the match, the German striker apologized for his behavior, explaining that his celebration was a response to what he described as insults directed at his family members by some fans.
Under the penalty, Brunner will miss Monaco’s matches against Toulouse on October 10 and Lorient on October 18, while the two additional matches of the penalty are suspended.
Bruner is making a strong start with Monaco this season, having scored 4 goals in 5 French league games, topping the competition's scoring charts so far.
Monaco leads the French league table with 13 points after five rounds.
