Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has stated that good performance alone is not enough in his team's match against Inter Milan on Tuesday, in the first round of the Champions League group stage.
Real Madrid suffered a surprise defeat against their host Real Betis (0-1) in the match that brought them together last Friday evening, as part of the fourth round of the Spanish Football League, despite putting on a good performance.
Mourinho said during the press conference dedicated to the match that will be held at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the capital, Madrid: "I want to win. I can say that I want us to play well, but we played well against Betis and we lost. I want to win."
Regarding his players' reaction after their first loss this season, he said: "I saw them as I like to see them. They were devastated in the dressing room after the match, then they recovered greatly in training yesterday, Sunday, and today everything is completely normal."
The Portuguese coach added: "After analyzing the match we played, we are increasingly convinced that we played a good game. We played against a strong team, and the mistakes we made were unusual. We are in good shape. We have some problems in midfield before tomorrow's match, but we will play and we will compete."
The former Inter Milan coach spoke about his memories at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, saying: "At the Bernabeu, I won the Champions League title (with Inter Milan against Bayern Munich), but I also lost in the semi-finals on penalties (with Real Madrid against Bayern Munich). I experienced the best and worst moments in this stadium."
Regarding the possibility of relying on Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield against Inter, Mourinho simply said: "I will not comment on that."
When asked if he owed Real Madrid the Champions League title, Mourinho said: "No. They are two different periods. I finished my job in 2013. We won what we won, and we lost what we lost. We gave it our all, and that phase is over."
He added: "This has nothing to do with the past. We are facing two different moments in the history of Real Madrid. That's how it is. In 2010, Real Madrid had not reached the quarter-finals, and had not played in the Champions League semi-finals for many years. Now, they have won 6 Champions League titles. These are completely different periods."
Mourinho revealed: "If you ask me if I am excited to win the Champions League with Real Madrid, then of course yes. But this is completely separate from the context of the previous stage."
