OpenAI announced that its Astra model has achieved the most significant milestone in the artificial intelligence industry, heralding the entry into the era of artificial general intelligence.
The company asserted that its new artificial intelligence model has achieved the breakthrough the industry has long sought. At the conclusion of a press call held Thursday to unveil the "Astra" model, CEO Greg Brockman said, "Welcome to the era of artificial general intelligence."
The term artificial general intelligence (AI) remains somewhat vague, yet it has become a central focus in the development of artificial intelligence. OpenAI defines it as autonomous intelligence capable of outperforming humans in most economically valuable tasks. The company has promoted its Astra model as a major research breakthrough and a radical shift in the range of tasks that can be assigned to AI, with availability to customers expected this week.
Brockman described the path to artificial general intelligence as gradual, noting his belief that people will look back on this stage as the moment AI was born, and perhaps this model represents that moment. He added, "Personally, I think we've reached that point."
The GPT 6 Astra comes about a year after OpenAI launched the GPT 5 family of models, and about two months after its latest update, GPT 5.6. The company described the Astra model as the smartest and most adaptable in the world, and as representing a qualitative leap in professional task performance.
