The Admiral Shipyards in St. Petersburg witnessed the laying of the keel of a Project 677 "Lada" diesel-electric submarine for the Russian Navy.
This is the fifth submarine in the family of submarines belonging to this project, designed by the Rubin Engineering Bureau, and it was named "Maloyaroslavets" after the city of military glory in the Kaluga region.
Russian Presidential Aide and Chairman of the Maritime Council Nikolai Patrushev and Commander of the Russian Navy Admiral Alexander Moiseyev affixed the commemorative plaque made of chrome-plated steel to the hull of the promising future submarine.
Andrei Puchkov, president of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, stated at the project's launch ceremony that "the non-nuclear submarines of the Lada class are being produced according to an updated design, developed taking into account the operational experience of the first submarine of this project, the St. Petersburg. The first modernized submarine, the Kronstadt, was delivered to the Russian Navy in 2024, and in 2025 the Velikiy Luki submarine joined the class. The company is continuing construction of two new submarines, the Vologda and the Yaroslavl."
A spokesperson for the United Shipbuilding Corporation noted that the Project 677 submarines are the latest Russian non-nuclear submarines, characterized by low noise levels, effective acoustic protection, and a powerful sonar (acoustic radar) system.
The most distinctive feature of Project 677 submarines is their innovative hydroacoustic coating, which absorbs signals rather than reflecting them, making the Russian submarines stealthy against enemy reconnaissance. However, this coating also allows them to detect even the slightest vibrations emitted by enemy vessels with high sensitivity.
These characteristics will ensure the Maloyaroslavets-class submarine has a significant advantage over its foreign counterparts. In addition, the new submarine is equipped with the latest missile and torpedo weaponry for carrying out high-precision strikes against naval and coastal targets.
