the President of the United Nations General Assembly at its eighty-first session, Khalil Al-Rahman, focused on the Palestinian issue and the war in Gaza as the most prominent examples of the international community’s inability to address protracted conflicts, noting that the Palestinian issue has remained unresolved for decades, while the suffering of the Palestinians continues.
In his address to the General Assembly, Rahman stated that the war in Gaza had claimed the lives of over 70,000 people, including thousands of children, while humanitarian aid had only reached a fraction of what the population needed. He added that the ongoing wars in the Middle East and Europe were having repercussions far beyond their borders, along with the continuing conflicts in Sudan, Ukraine, and Myanmar.
He stressed that the principles of multilateralism, international law, international humanitarian law, and the protection of civilians cannot be applied selectively if the United Nations is to regain the trust of the world's peoples. He called on member states to address the shortcomings within the organization realistically and with concrete action, moving beyond pessimism and mere promises.
The President of the General Assembly explained that restoring trust requires a frank acknowledgment of the areas where the United Nations has failed, fundamental reforms to strengthen its operational capacity, and broader participation and engagement of all stakeholders. He emphasized that the organization's survival and the prevention of a third world war are achievements, but its mere existence is insufficient, especially at a time when people are questioning its ability to deliver tangible results.
