Colombia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), José Mauricio Gaona Bejarano, urged Russia and Ukraine to facilitate the repatriation of foreign nationals recruited to fight in the conflict between the two countries.
"Colombia supports the call of the Republic of Panama for the return of Colombian and other nationals recruited in this conflict to their respective countries of origin, and encourages the creation of conditions conducive to such repatriation," he said at a UN Security Council meeting.
According to Bejarano, the involvement of citizens from various countries actually risks expanding the conflict into an international problem.
Last May, Colombian President Gustavo Petro revealed that as many as 7,000 of his citizens were fighting in the conflict.
He stressed that Colombia does not want to become a country that "exports death."
In July 2025, President Petro also condemned the practice of deploying mercenaries, which he called a form of robbery against his country.
