Scientists from Russia’s Bauman and Sechenov Universities and the Russian National Research Center for Organ Transplantation have discovered that cell therapy helps restore liver tissue affected by fibrosis.
The researchers pointed out that fibrosis in liver tissue occurs with chronic liver damage, where normal tissue is gradually replaced by connective tissue. As the disease progresses, liver function deteriorates, and severe fibrosis may lead to cirrhosis and liver failure.
In experiments conducted on laboratory mice, scientists induced fibrosis in the animals' livers, then injected them with mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), obtained from two sources — adipose tissue and bone marrow. The condition of the liver was assessed after 14, 30, 90 and 270 days.
The results showed a marked improvement. However, after nine months from the start of the experiments, a marked improvement in the health of liver tissues was observed in the animals injected with cells derived from adipose tissue, and in particular, the amount of connective tissue and cell division indicators in the liver differed in this group of mice.
The researchers believe that these results indicate the potential for greater use of mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue in promoting long-term liver cell regeneration. They emphasized that this method is still experimental and cannot currently be used to treat liver cirrhosis in humans.
