Apple this week unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, with a book-like design and a large internal screen that expands to 7.6 inches when the device is unfolded.
The controversy surrounding the phone began after users noticed that several controls, including the app bar and some navigation tools, appeared on the right side of the screen. Left-handed users felt this design made accessing essential functions less easy.
Several users interacted with the phone on the "X" platform, with some expressing their admiration for its design but noting that the layout of the interface elements might be a drawback. One user said he had considered buying the phone but might reconsider due to the difficulty of using it with his left hand.
The design also sparked debate on Reddit, with users demanding an option to move the app bar to the left side of the screen. Others criticized Apple, arguing that such details should have received more attention from a company so focused on user experience.
The iPhone Duo features a foldable, book-like design, with a 5.4-inch external screen and a 7.6-inch internal screen. The larger screen allows the phone to be used in various positions, including partially opening it to view content or using it like a book.
The device is powered by the A20 Pro chip, which supports multitasking and running different apps on opposite sides of the internal screen. It also supports Apple Pencil, making it the first iPhone to offer this functionality.
In terms of photography, the phone features a 48-megapixel rear camera, and it will cost around $1,999, with its release in the markets expected next month.
The phone puts Apple in the foldable phone market for the first time, but early controversy over its interface highlights another challenge for the company: ensuring the device is easy to use for different users, including left-handed users.
