A study conducted by researchers in South Korea found a link between the use of weight-loss drugs and higher rates of reported depression and suicidal thoughts.
Researchers analyzed health and psychological data from nearly 27,000 adults, including 846 who reported using prescription weight-loss medications. They found that users of these medications were 93% more likely to report depression and 168% more likely to report suicidal thoughts compared to non-users.
Approximately 22% of weight-loss drug users reported experiencing depression, compared to 11% of non-users, while about 10% of users reported suicidal thoughts, compared to 4.5% of non-users. Additionally, 2.2% of users reported planning suicide, compared to 1.4% of non-users.
The study also explored the relationship between weight regain and mental health among users of GLP-1 medications. Researchers found that individuals who regained between 5.9 and 10 kg were 65% more likely to report suicidal thoughts compared to those who regained between 2.7 and 5.9 kg. This figure rose to 267% for those who regained more than 10 kg.
The likelihood of planning suicide and seeking mental health advice also increased among people who regained more weight, while the study did not record a clear increase in the risk of depression associated with weight regain.
The researchers emphasized that their study was observational and therefore could not prove that weight-loss medications cause depression or suicidal thoughts. Other factors may explain the association observed in the study, necessitating further research to determine the nature of the relationship.
The study, published in the Korean Journal of Family Medicine, relied on data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2013 and 2022. The study did not specify the exact types of GLP-1 drugs used by the participants.
