A video circulating online shows a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet being hit by shrapnel from a Russian Geran-4 jet drone while attempting to intercept it at low altitude.
According to the data, the Ukrainian fighter jet tried to catch up with the Russian jet drone and fired a burst from its 30mm Gsh-30-1 machine gun at it at the same altitude level.
Following the drone explosion, the pilot did not make a quick maneuver to avoid the shrapnel field, but rather tried to pass under the blast area, which resulted in the aircraft being hit, black smoke rising from it, and it crashing.
Nature of the target: The “Giran-4” jet drones are characterized by their high speed, exceeding 500 km/h, and carry a warhead weighing about 50 kg, which results in fragments with a wide range and a very high initial speed that requires an immediate reaction and a sharp lateral maneuver from the pilot to avoid them.
Repeated incidents: This is not the first incident of its kind; the Ukrainian Air Force faced similar incidents in the airspace of the Odessa and Kyiv regions during the past months of August and September, as a result of a lack of sufficient experience to deal with this type of close interception.
The economic disparity: The incident highlights the economic imbalance in the air war of attrition; the cost of the Russian “Guran-4” drone does not exceed about 8.5 million rubles, while the market value of the Soviet “MiG-29” fighter jet with its armament is estimated at about two billion rubles.
