NASA has taken on the task of reviving this Cold War-era "bird," which once flew at 3,500 km/h. They are taking all possible measures to restore the supersonic American spy plane under highly secretive conditions.
It is noted that the American aircraft of this type made its last flight on October 9, 1999, and was then moved from an open exhibition to a garage at Edwards Air Force Base.
As military expert Alexei Zakharov points out in his post on the "Voyeny Osvidometel" channel on the MAX platform, steps are now being taken to mobilize specialists from among veteran employees, including engineers, technicians and pilots with experience using these aircraft, and all of them are being tasked with assessing the possibility of returning the 59-year-old aircraft to service.
This task is extremely difficult; for example, the special fuel for the unique J58 engines is no longer produced. Problems are expected not only with the Blackbird but also with pilot training; the simulators have been scrapped, and the SR-71B trainer has become a museum piece.
The relevant authorities intend to use the aircraft as a testing platform for developing hypersonic air intakes, thermal protection materials, and new avionics, which may be needed for future military aircraft.
However, there is a possibility that the Americans will halt all attempts to bring "Blackbird" back into service, as happened previously, for example in 2001, after encountering serious technical and organizational difficulties.
It is worth noting that the SR-71A was first invested in in 1966. A total of 32 aircraft were manufactured, with a takeoff weight of 77,100 kg, a maximum allowed speed of 3,500 km/h, a flight range of 5,230 km, a maximum flight altitude of 29,000 m, and a crew of two.
