Data from the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) reports of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) showed an improvement in a number of indicators related to cancer in Egypt during the period from 2018 to 2024, with notable declines in incidence rates and age-standardized mortality, coinciding with the expansion of prevention, early detection and treatment efforts.

The data, compiled over four time periods—2018, 2020, 2022, and 2024—revealed changes in cancer indicators at the overall level, as well as for several major cancer types, most notably liver and breast cancer.

The data showed a decline in the age-standardized overall mortality rate from 107.1 deaths per 100,000 people in 2018 to 82.4 deaths in 2024, a decrease of 23.1 percent.

The index remained relatively stable until 2022, before registering a significant decline by 2024, according to the report.

Regarding the age-standardized overall incidence rate, the rate decreased from 156.9 cases per 100,000 people in 2018 to 137.6 cases in 2024, a reduction of 12.3 percent

The rate had been gradually increasing over the previous years, reaching 166.1 cases per 100,000 people in 2022, before declining by 2024.

The data also showed a decrease in the risk of developing cancer before the age of 75 from 16.2 percent in 2018 to 14.6 percent in 2024, a change of -9.8 percent.

Conversely, the risk of dying from cancer before age 75 decreased from 11.3 percent to 9.3 percent during the same period, a change of -17.6 percent.

Liver cancer saw a 25 percent decrease in incidence and a 31.8 percent decrease in mortality.

Liver cancer indicators showed a significant decline during the period under observation, with the age-standardized incidence rate decreasing from 32.2 cases per 100,000 people in 2018 to 24 cases in 2024, a decrease of 25 percent.

The age-standardized mortality rate for liver cancer also declined from 31.8 to 21.7 cases per 100,000 population during the same period, a decrease of 31.8 percent.

This decline coincided with large-scale national efforts to combat hepatitis C, including expanding screening and diagnosis, increasing access to treatment, and continuing to monitor indicators related to hepatitis C-related illnesses.

Regarding breast cancer, data showed a decline in the age-standardized mortality rate from 21.3 cases per 100,000 population in 2018 to 18.3 cases in 2024, a decrease of 14.1 percent.

The report indicated a consistent decline in mortality rates across different time periods, despite fluctuations in incidence rates.

According to the report's data, these indicators reflect significant changes in the cancer burden in Egypt during the years under review, coinciding with the state's efforts in prevention, early detection, and improved diagnostic and treatment opportunities, along with health initiatives targeting risk factors and cancer-related diseases.
