Google continues to reorganize the tools of its Gemini smart assistant, in a move aimed at making its functions easier to access and expanding its ability to perform daily tasks, by integrating its smart agent Spark into the conversation interface under the name "Task", and introducing "Skills", which are reusable instructions that help users accomplish repetitive tasks.
The change provides a more direct way to access the functions of Spark, which Google introduced as a personal AI agent capable of performing tasks on behalf of the user. Instead of logging into a separate tool, the user can choose Task mode to start a task and track its progress within Gemini's main interface.
This organization aims to reduce navigation between application sections and facilitate the follow-up of tasks initiated by the user. The report indicated that the change has begun to appear on the Android system, without confirming its simultaneous rollout across all platforms.
Skills... Reusable Instructions
In a parallel change, Google announced on September 30th the introduction of skills to the Gemini app and Google Workspace apps, as part of a gradual transition away from the Gems tool, which allows the creation of customized versions of the assistant based on specific instructions and needs.
The skills are based on an open standard that uses Markdown files, a format for formatting text, and instructions written in a file named (SKILL.md). According to Google, this allows skills created by the user on other platforms to be transferred to Gemini.
A gradual transition from gems to skills
The introduction of skills does not mean the immediate disappearance of Gems. Google explained that the transition will be gradual, and according to the timeline announced by the company, skills will begin to reach Gemini users during this October, with Gems being moved to the application settings starting from November 17, while the possibility of using them will continue during that phase.
As for business and enterprise accounts, the shutdown of Games will not begin before March 2027, while the deadline for education accounts extends to at least June 2027. Google says it will automatically transfer the remaining tools to Gemini Skills Drafts when the shutdown begins.
