Kornev finished the race in 20.26 seconds, breaking the previous record of 20.31 seconds, which was set by his compatriot Vladimir Morozov in 2017, thus ending the record's nine-year reign.
Kornef finished second, behind Australian Cameron McEvoy, who won the race after covering the distance in 20.22 seconds.
This achievement comes at a time when Russian swimmers have been allowed to participate in the International Swimming Federation competitions under the Russian flag and national anthem.
