The innovative granules are based on hydroxyapatite, a compound similar in structure to the mineral component of bone tissue, and strontium and silver ions have been added to their composition, giving them properties that help them integrate with bone tissue, in addition to their antibacterial effect.
According to the inventors, this innovation is designed to fill large bone defects that can result from severe fractures, diseases, and surgeries. The granules' composition and manufacturing technology allow for precise control over their porosity, mechanical strength, and gradual dissolution rate within the body. This process takes at least three weeks in laboratory conditions.
“As is well known, silver has antibacterial properties, but too much of it can negatively affect not only bacteria but also the body’s cells,” says Ekaterina Chikanova, associate professor in the Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the university. “Therefore, when manufacturing the material, it is important to choose the appropriate amount of silver to ensure the desired antibacterial effect without harming healthy tissues.”
