The study involved 135 women, 55 of whom were diagnosed with breast cancer. Scientists measured the concentrations of five proteins in the blood: osteopontin, soluble VEGFR2, neuropilin-1, suPAR, and tynasin-C, which are proteins associated with inflammation, the formation of new blood vessels, and tumor growth.

Based on these indicators, specialists created a system to assess the risk of developing breast cancer . Tests showed that the system detected 96.4% of cases, but it sometimes incorrectly indicated an increased risk in healthy women.

It turns out that the most important protein as an indicator is osteopontin, which is involved in inflammation and the spread of cancer cells. Scientists are also studying the possibility of using it as a potential target for new anti-cancer drugs.

Researchers believe the new analysis may help in the future to identify women who need additional screening for breast cancer, stressing that this method has been tested on a small sample of people, so it cannot currently replace mammography for detecting the disease.
